The Manhattan Ladder is now live!
The Manhattan Tennis Association presents the 2023 Manhattan Ladder a competitive year long ladder for tennis players in New York.
Ladder players compete for end of year cash prizes, Tennishead Tour Club Membership (ASICS head-to-toe tennis outfits), trophies, MTA merchandise and end of year court programming.
Ladder Entry Fee $50
Upon ladder entry all players will receive a free digital subscription to Tennishead (valued at $15) containing The Bagel newsletter and digital access to all past issues of Tennishead magazine (168 pages per issue)
*all ladder entrants must complete 10 matches to qualify for end of year prizes.
Plus, in addition to cash prizes, the top 3 places at the end of the season win a Tennishead TOUR CLUB membership valued at over $700 and containing the following -

Tennis Ladder Rules
1. The ladder is located in:
Country: United States State: New York City: New York City
2. The ladder is open to the following players:
Playing Level: 4.00 to 5.99
Match Format: Singles
Gender:
All
3. This ladder will begin April 21, 2023 and end September 30, 2023.
4. Players have 4 days to accept or decline a challenge before it is automatically declined.
5. Players will forfeit a match when they decline a challenge.
6. Players have 14 days to play an accepted challenge before it expires and the following occurs:
The challenge is simply cancelled.
7. Players can have up to 2 pending outgoing challenge at a time. This includes an outgoing challenge that has been accepted but not played. The outgoing challenge has to be completed before a new one can be made.
8. Players can have up to 1 pending incoming challenge at a time. This includes an incoming challenge that has been accepted but not played. The incoming challenge has to be completed before a new one can be accepted.
9. Players have 3 wildcard challenges. Wildcards allows a team to play a team much higher ranked than the rules typically allow.
10. Match Instructions:
Try to play best of 3 if time is not a constraint. If limited to 1hr, play either Fast4 Best of 3 with a 3rd Set Tiebreaker or a Single Set. Both players bring a new can of balls for play. The Challenger chooses which balls to use. The winner of the match takes home the unopened can of balls. The loser takes the used balls or recycles them.
11. Players will not be penalized for not playing matches.
12. Players may only play an opponent within 5 ranks above them.
13. Forfeits will be treated like a lost match, and will affect rankings and points.
14. Any of the following match formats can be used:
Best of 3 Sets: Best of 3 sets is first to win 2 sets. Each set is first to win 6 or more games with a margin of 2 games. A tie-breaker is played if each team has won 6 games.
Example scores: 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 or 6-4, 7-6 Single Set: A single set is first to win 6 or more games with a margin of 2 games. A tie-breaker is played if each team has won 6 games.
Example scores: 6-3 or 7-6 Anything Goes: This will allow any score to be submitted without any validation. Not always recommended.
Example scores: 5-3, 8-2 or 21-20, 21-18 Best of 3 Sets with 3rd Set Tiebreak: Best of 3 sets is first to win 2 sets. Each set is first to win 6 or more games with a margin of 2 games. A tie-breaker is played if each team has won 6 games. The third set tiebreak can be played to any number of points as long as the winner wins more points than the loser.
Example scores: 6-3, 5-7, 1-0 or 6-3, 7-6 Fast4 Best of 3 Sets: Best of 3 Fast4 sets, is first to win 2 sets. Each set is first to win 4 games. A Fast4 tie-breaker is played if each team has won 3 games. A Fast4 tie-breaker is the first team to win 5 points. Read more about Fast4 here.
Example scores: 4-3, 2-4, 4-1 or 4-1, 4-0 Fast4 Best of 3 Sets with 3rd Set Tiebreak: Best of 3 Fast4 sets is first to win 2 sets. Each set is first to win 4 games. A Fast4 tie-breaker is played if each team has won 3 games. If each team has won a set, a Fast4 tie-breaker will be played. A Fast4 tie-breaker is the first team to win 5 points. 15. The following system will be used to compute a player's position on the ladder.
Leap Frog: This is the most basic and simplest ranking system. When a lower ranked player beats a higher ranked player, the lower ranked player "leap frogs" over the higher ranked player, pushing them and each player initially between them down one spot. If the higher ranked player wins, nothing happens.
16. After the match, the winner will submit the score.
17. All ladder members should maintain current contact information. If you change phone numbers or e-mail addresses, you must update your profile so other member can contact you and you will receive email notifications.
